By Haley Daniels,
Canadian Olympic Team Woman’s Canoe Slalom & Harmony Ambassador
It has been a very exciting start to my season where it all kicked off having a flawless run at National Team Trials at the Kananaskis River and reclaimed the first spot on the Canadian Team. I was also asked to become an ambassador with WaterAid Canada where I traveled to Ghana in early June to help launch a program called WASH 4 Public Health which is an initiative using a play format to educate about the importance of washing hands, water sanitation and bacterial infections. I am also one of the faces of a new Campaign called The WaterFight a global movement to make clean water and decent toilets normal for every child. Like so many women around the world, I am faced with challenges because of my gender. The same is true for the young girls from Mirchaiya, Nepal that are profiled in the campaign.
Following this I was home in Canada for a short time which was just enough time to recover and pack. Then I was off to Europe for the first round of World Cups in Prague, Czech Republic; Augsburg, Germany; and Leipzig, Germany. They were all very tough races each presenting their own obstacles, but I rose to the challenge and threw down in World Cup #3 in Leipzig where I made my first semi final of the season and placed 6th in a newly introduced category called Boater Cross (similar to ski cross where there are head and head heats that go down a set course). Making the semi final means that I made the basic requirement to be considered for Sport Canada Carding, it is not finalized yet, but this result has put me in the running!
I am now back in Calgary putting some km’s on my bike for aerobic training, going off some small waterfalls to work on some technique and recovering to be ready for the second half of the season.
I head to Ottawa on August 1 for National Championships and then two Ontario Cup races in Barries Bay and Minden Ontario (Toronto 2015 Pan Am river). I then head back to Europe for World Cup #4 in Ivrea, Italy and World Cup #5 in La Seu D’Urgell, Spain and then the World Championships in Pau, France. Following this I come home for some rest and then head to Costa Rica for the last race of the season Pan American Championships.
